Doberman Pinscher Barking

How To Control Doberman Pinscher Barking

Not only is Doberman Pinscher barking obnoxiously loud for those around, it is also quite frightening to neighbors, delivery people and individuals that stroll by your house or that you pass on the street while you’re out for your walk.  Probably the greatest benefit received by having a Doberman in your home is a heightened level of protection.  One that barks at intruders is always welcome in any household.  However, what do you do when Doberman Pinscher barking gets out of control?

Understand the Behavior

The first thing you need to do is understand the cause behind your Doberman Pinscher barking.  Traditionally, your dog will have a reason why he is barking.  Whether he is bored, hungry, cold or really sensing immediate danger, you need to determine the triggering factor.  If your neighbors have been so kind to inform you that you have an issue with your Doberman Pinscher barking when you are not at home, your dog is ether bored or having separation anxiety issues that needs to be addressed. A helpful tip for bored dogs who are left alone throughout the day is to exercise them before you leave and invest in some of those spectacular toys that you hide treats inside.  These can keep a dog busy or tire him out, hopefully both.

Puppy Barking

Ideally, Doberman Pincher barking habits will be addressed as a puppy.  Never allow your puppy to bark at you without a reason and when he does stop barking after being asked, reward him with praise or a treat. By allowing your puppy to bark for no reason, pretty much guarantees that you will have an adult that will not understand why their behavior is all of a sudden not acceptable. If you control barking at a young age, it is much easier to deal with than if you let it go until your dog is mature.  A stern “No!” is typically all that it takes to quiet a puppy, providing you have taught him basic obedience commands.

Adult Barking

Doberman Pinscher barking in adult dogs is disturbing but if you have never trained your dog otherwise, he has no idea that you don’t appreciate the sound that he is making.  If you have adopted your dog as an adult, there are ways to stop the barking as well.  Keep in mind that adopted dogs really want to please you but they have to first learn not to fear you. When you are dealing with your Doberman Pinscher barking, always be sure to address the situation immediately with a stern “No!” and remember that yelling or saying other commands will only confuse your dog.  One of the most effective methods to deal with this problem is with a squirt bottle.

Although dogs usually love water, a small stream of it to the forehead, for whatever reason, seems to silence them.  Eventually  they will catch on that they are being squirted because of the barking.  Remember to not overdo it.  A small squirt is all that you should need. However, if your dog’s bark is accompanied by a growl, this is an aggression issue that needs to be dealt with and the water bottle is probably not the best idea. It is always important that you determine if there is a reason why your dog is barking first.  If you cannot come up with one, ask him to stop or say “No!” first, before you use the water bottle.  Your dog has to be given the opportunity to correct his behavior first. Doberman Pinscher barking habits are much easier to deal with when your pet is a puppy but with a bit of patience, you can teach your adult dog to stop barking unnecessarily too.
